Visiting the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee!

“If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.”

-The Lightning Theif

Calling all Percy Jackson Fans!

Growing up, I read every Percy Jackson novel and always dreamed of my own demi-god adventures. Although none of the gods or goddesses ever claimed me as their own, I always had a fascination with Greek Mythology.

When I first heard about the Parthenon, I was ecstatic. Finding out it was only a 10 hour drive did nothing to deter me. I rounded up my siblings and set out for a weekend road trip to the Music City.

Nashville is one of the most beautiful and versatile cities. Considered to be the heart of country music, it also boasts an incredible history and connection to Ancient Greece.

Often nicknamed the “Athens of the South”, this vibrant city hosts the only full-scale replica of the Ancient Greek Parthenon. Set in a beautiful park, the Parthenon offers amazing views and also allows individuals to learn a little bit more about the history of the building.

How much does it cost?

Access to the outside of the Parthenon is free, but you’ll need to pay an admission fee of $10 to get into the museum. Split into two levels, the lower level has different artifacts and artwork from famous local artists.  Many of the paintings were done by 19th and 20th century artists. They later donated them to the museum.

However, the best part of the entire museum was hands-down the statue of Athena. I felt as though I had gone back in time to Ancient Greece. I was in awe of how stunning and regal Athena was. Covered in gold and ivory, the statue is a duplicate of the one that stood in the original Parthenon for over 500 years.

Her statue is considered the tallest indoor statue in the US and stands at 42 feet. When it was first created, it was plain white. However, Athena was later gilded in gold to resemble the original. A human-sized Nike (goddess of victory) stands in her palm, and a massive snake is poised next to her shield.

Who is Athena?

If you’re wondering who Athena is or why she is so important, look no further.

Athena was the patron goddess of the city of Athena and the Parthenon served as her temple. She is the goddess of war, wisdom, justice, the arts, crafts, and skill. She is often referred to as “grey-eyed”, as shown in the replica. It is said that she has no mother and was born as an adult after she sprang from the head of her father Zeus. Allegedly, Athena was born fully armed, and thus, was considered the goddess- warrior.

Some Tips Before you Go…

In all honesty, I would rate this experience a 6/10! While the replica exceeded my expectations, the location of the Parthenon and the amenities surrounding it were a bit lacking and random. If you’re visiting with children, there might not be many activities to keep them entertained. Be sure to eat before you go, since there isn’t anything next to the museum.  Tickets can only be bought when you arrive and not in advance, so just be prepared for that!
